Hand-coded website or WordPress: why it changes everything

Let us be honest from the outset: WordPress is not “bad”. It runs a good part of the web, and for some projects it is a defensible choice. But when people ask us why our sites are coded by hand rather than built on WordPress, the answer comes down to four concrete points: speed, security, search, ownership.

Speed: what Google actually measures

A WordPress site is a generic base + a theme + often ten, fifteen, twenty extensions (plugins) stacked on top. Each brick loads its own code, its scripts, its styles. The result: heavy pages that take several seconds to appear, especially on mobile.

A hand-coded site contains only what it needs. No dead code, no plugin loading three libraries to display a button. Our pages appear in a fraction of a second, and Google measures that (the famous Core Web Vitals) and factors it into rankings.

Security: fewer doors, fewer intrusions

The price of WordPress’s popularity is that it is the number one target for automated attacks. Every plugin is a potential way in; one left un-updated and the site can be hacked, slowed down or filled with spam. Hence the permanent maintenance: updates, backups, security patches, often charged monthly.

A site with no public database and no exposed admin interface simply means far fewer doors to watch.

Search: a clean site starts ahead

SEO is not a plugin. Light code, clean HTML structure, optimised images, minimal load time: those are the foundations Google leans on. A bespoke site is built optimised from the start, instead of being patched up afterwards by an extension.

Ownership: who owns your site, in the end?

This is the point people forget most, and the most important. With some “turnkey” packages, the site is in fact rented to you: you pay every month, and the day you leave, you take nothing with you. A site that belongs to you, code included, is one you can grow, host wherever you like, and hand to whoever you like.

So, never WordPress?

It would be dishonest to say that. If you publish an article a day and manage everything yourself, the WordPress ecosystem makes sense. But for a professional, fast, long-lasting brochure site or small shop, bespoke wins on every criterion that matters to your customers, and to Google.

With us, every site is coded by hand, a mockup is approved before development, and the code belongs to you for life. It is all set out, prices included, on the website design page.
