People often ask us the question the wrong way round. “I need an e-commerce site”, when digging a little shows a well-built brochure site would do the job, for two to three times less. The reverse happens too: a brochure site ordered in a rush, then the regret at not being able to sell online six months later. Here is how to decide before spending.
What exactly is a brochure site
A brochure site presents your business: who you are, what you offer, your work, and how to reach you. It does not sell directly, it makes people want to call you, book, or drop in.
It is the right choice if:
- you sell a service (tradesperson, restaurant, therapist, agency, freelancer);
- payment happens on site, by quote or over the counter;
- your goal is the phone ringing and the form being filled in.
A brochure site can perfectly well include a contact form, appointment booking, a map, a photo gallery, a menu. It stays much simpler, and cheaper, than a shop.
When is e-commerce genuinely justified
An online shop adds a whole machine: product pages, basket, secure payment, stock management, delivery, VAT, invoices, returns handling. It is powerful, but each brick is more development, so more budget and more maintenance.
E-commerce is the way if:
- you sell physical or digital products the customer must be able to buy on their own, around the clock;
- you have a catalogue that changes, with prices and stock to keep current;
- a genuine share of your turnover will go through online payment.
If you sell three products and take two orders a month, a full shop is often oversized. A simple payment button or click & collect will do.
The third choice people forget: hybrid
The reality is that many businesses sit between the two. A restaurant wants a brochure site plus online booking. A shop wants to present itself plus sell three best-sellers via click & collect. A tradesperson wants their brochure site plus the ability to take a deposit online.
That is where a modular approach changes everything: we start from a solid brochure site and add only the brick that serves a purpose (booking, payment, shop), no more, no less. You do not pay for a full e-commerce engine when a payment module does the job.
And in budget terms
The gap is real: a bespoke brochure site starts at around €1,199, while a full shop quickly climbs into several thousand euros, catalogue and integrations included. The trap is paying the price of an e-commerce site for a brochure need, or cobbling together a brochure site that will have to be rebuilt entirely to sell later.
So the right question is not “brochure or e-commerce?” but “what must my visitor be able to do on my site?”. Book? Request a quote? Buy right now? The answer draws the site, not the other way round.
That is exactly why we publish our prices and our modules plainly on the website design page: you see what each brick costs, and we tell you frankly which one is useful in your case. The quote is free within 24 hours.
