You read all sorts of things about PLA: “100% eco-friendly”, “natural”, “zero impact”. The truth is more honest, and more interesting, than the slogan. PLA has real strengths, but also limits worth knowing, because a “green” claim that does not hold up always ends up backfiring on whoever made it.
What is genuinely good about PLA
It does not come from oil. PLA (polylactic acid) is bio-sourced: it comes from renewable plant resources, such as corn or sugarcane starch. Unlike conventional plastics, it does not draw on a fossil resource.
It takes less energy to produce than most petroleum plastics, and printing happens at moderate temperature, with no aggressive solvents.
It is recyclable in the right conditions, and it does not release toxic substances in use.
On paper, then, it ticks real boxes. But.
Where we should stay honest
Bio-sourced does not mean impact-free. Producing PLA still consumes energy and agricultural resources. It is a far better starting point than petroleum plastic, but no manufactured object is truly “neutral”, and it is always worth being wary of “zero impact” promises.
Recycling remains limited in practice. Common waste streams do not yet recover PLA well. So the genuinely useful move is first of all not to overproduce, and to make objects built to last rather than to be thrown away.
In other words: the material is a good start, but it does not do everything.
The real lever is making to order
Here is the point we put forward, and it often weighs more than the material itself: we only print what has been ordered. No blind mass production, no unsold stock, no containers of giveaways destined for the scrapheap.
An object imported 5,000 at a time of which 3,000 will be thrown away, even “eco-friendly” on paper, is still waste. A run of 50 pieces, made to order, near you, in a bio-sourced material: the arithmetic is not the same.
What we actually do
Our objects are printed in bio-sourced PLA, to order, in our workshop in the Médoc. Three choices that limit waste: a renewable material, production with no overstock, and a short supply chain (no transport from the other side of the world).
